Learning JS @ HackerYou

In the spring of 2016 after a recommendation from a co-worker, I registered to take a course to learn Javascript at HackerYou from instructor Wes Bos.

The registration process was quick, friendly, and easy, and the management staff themselves immediately made you feel like you wanted to be there. The buildings and learning spaces were clean, inviting, and very well maintained. Before I had even taken my first class, HackerYou was already hitting all of the marks.

Going into the course I knew very basic jQuery. Making a button, hiding/showing things on the screen, fading items in and out. My understanding of how the language worked was very basic at best, and my familiarity with the syntax was rather sparse.

The Javascript course at HackerYou started us off by teaching the very basics of plain, vanilla Javascript, teaching us the basics of using strings, numbers, booleans, objects, and arrays, and the built-in functions and methods in the programming language, and how commands are executed in the browser. We then progressed into more complex scripting and creating custom functions and methods before transitioning into jQuery and APIs.

Wes’ approach to instructing made very class interesting and engaging from the start of the class, right up until the last minute. It would be 9:30pm, with over an hour commute to get home, but I honestly wouldn’t have minded staying in class longer. Wes took the time to break everything down and explain things in very simple terms that made everything quick and easy to understand. Rather than just read over material, he had you code along with him in class. By writing the code over and over again with Wes in class, your familiarity with the syntax and how Javascript worked grew exponentially with every class.

The mentors chosen by Wes and HackerYou for the part-time course were exceptional. Karley MacDonald, Anna Mackenzie, and Matt Fairley were always very friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help anyone and everyone in the class. If you were struggling with anything in class, between Wes and the mentors, you were guaranteed to find your way through the problem. They didn’t fix the problem for you, they guided you through it and helped you to understand why you were doing what you were doing.

I would highly recommend this course to any Web Developer looking to learn Javascript, or like me, extend their knowledge. It was easily one of the most worthwhile investments I could have made. I guarantee, you won’t regret it!
